Some Ubuntu tweaks for netbooks

Filed under: Linux — lars @ 07:52:39 pm

I've recently made a couple of useful tweaks to the Ubuntu install on my little eee netbook to make it a bit easier to work with on this small device.

  1. Disable touchpad when typing - Under "System" -> "Preferences" -> "Startup Applications" you can add the following command:
    syndaemon -d -i 0.3
This will disable the touchpad for 0.3 seconds after each key press, preventing you from accidentally moving the mouse with your thumbs while typing (something I do all the time when the keyboard and touchpad are crammed together on this little device!)

  2. Rename the Applications and System top-level menus - On a 10" screen, screen real estate is a premium, especially on your gnome panels.  The standard Gnome "Edit Menus" that comes up on right click doesn't allow the editing of these top-level menus.  I found this thread which described how to rename them using a messages file specific to your language/locale:

Now you can get back to enjoying your ultra-mobile Ubuntu.
